Assessment Guidelines

These assessment guidelines were written and reviewed by the LVGSA board. The purpose of assessments is to distribute talent evenly and ensure Fair Play for all. These rules are not intended to give any manager leverage. Rules apply to all managers, coaches, and players.

Communication

Assessment dates and times will be communicated via email, social media, and the LVGSA website.

Arrival & Check-In

  • Please arrive 30–45 minutes early to check in, select uniform sizes, and warm up.

What to Bring

  • Glove
  • Face mask
  • Cleats
  • Water bottle
  • Loaner equipment will be available if needed.

Playing Up / Playing Down

  • A player may assess to play up a division. Players playing up must be drafted by a manager. If not drafted, they will be placed in their age-appropriate division draft.
  • Hat picks are not allowed for players playing up.
  • No player may play down a division without approval from the Player Agent, Commissioner, and President.

Registration, Uniforms & Locations

  • Registration and uniform tables will be set up next to the men’s room and snack bar.
  • Our uniform vendor will size all players.
  • Assessments will be on Rivera Field.
  • Pitching & catching assessments will be on the North Field at the end of each age group’s assessment.
  • Warm-up area is on the North outfield area only.

Hat Picks & Requests

  • Any player that does not assess will be a hat pick (drawn after the general draft order).
  • Hat picks cannot make requests to play with other players.
  • Any coach request must be made in writing to the Player Agent by the end of assessments. Requests are not guaranteed but may be considered during the draft.

Coach Blocks / Locks & Special Circumstances

  • Coach blocks are not allowed. Special circumstances must be communicated to the League Commissioner and approved by the Manager Liaison, Player Agent, Commissioner, and President.
  • The Commissioner, Player Agent, and Manager Liaison will assess all division players to support the draft process.
  • Coach locks must be made in writing before assessments to the Manager Liaison and require approval.

Assessment Drills

Players will be assessed on the following drills:

Pop Flies

  • 3 pop flies will be hit to left field.

Ground Balls

  • 3 ground balls will be hit to shortstop.
  • Players will field and throw to 1st base.
  • After fielding, players move to 1st base and catch for the next player.
  • 6U: throw to the pitcher.

1st Base

  • Catching 3 balls at 1st base.
  • 6U: catch at pitcher.

Hitting

  • 5 balls pitched using the pitching machine.
  • Players run to 1st base on the 5th pitch.
  • 6U: 3 coach pitches and 3 off the tee.

Running

  • Run from home to 1st base after the 5th pitch.

Pitchers

  • Pitch 10 pitches to a catcher.

Catchers

  • Catch 10 pitches. On the last two pitches, throw to 2nd base.
